. >> the latest unemployment figures are trending in the wrong direction. jennifer franciotti is live downtown with more on this. good morning. >> if you have been out of work, this news comes as no surprise. finding a job is not easy. there is discouraging news. maryland's unemployment rate rose unemployment7.3% in august. there was a significant increase in unemployment in maryland and florida. the number dropped since the recession reportedly ended. >> the labor market will always lag the recovery. the economic output has increase. the labor market has not caught up with that. in terms of getting by with squeezing more productivity out of existing workers. >> there is a website to help marylanders out of work of finding a job. is the maryland workforce exchange. we have posted a link on our website. click on project economy. jennifer franciotti, wbal-tv 11 news. >> the news is not all bad. 200 new jobs will be created and the transmission plants in white marsh. this is thanks to a government grant. it was approved by the government. there is good news for a change on the housing market. new
shooting. >> jennifer franciotti is live with more on the story. >> there was a police tape yesterday. it will try to be business as usual today. paul pardus is the suspect. he was upset after receiving medical information about his mother. he pulled out a gun and shot the doctor. that doctor has been identified as dr. david cohen, a spinal surgeon at the hospital. we will have more on his condition in a moment. security called city police who responded with a variety of other agencies, including swat teams. for more than two hours, pardus was barricaded in a room with his mother in the nelson building. at one point, parts of the hospital were evaluated. police learned something had happened inside the room. they went in to find pardus and his mother were dead from single gunshot wounds to the head. >> at this point we're treating this case as a murder-suicides. >> as for dr. cohen, spent much of the day in surgery for a gunshot wound. we do not have an update on his condition. the big question right now, how could a government get inside the hospital? we will have more answers for th
breaking news out of northwest baltimore. there was a two alarm blaze this morning. >> jennifer franciotti is live at the scene in northwest with more. good morning. >> that fire is under control. firefighters are putting out some hot spots. it looks like a portion of liberty heights was shut down. in looks like traffic has reopened. fire fighters were using a fire hydrant along liberty heights. the fire started about 3:30 this morning on hillsdale. it happened to a vacant house. the intensity of the fire was so big that it's spread to two adjacent homes. one of the homes had been turned into a nursing home with four residents. they were safely evacuated. no injuries reported there. the other house, there was one occupant inside. he got out safely. no one was inside the vacant house. it did go to two alarms because of the intensity of the fire. firefighters were able to make a good knock on the fire and get everything under control. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. fire equipment remains on the scene. reporting live, jennifer franciotti, wbal-tv 11 news. >> it thank you.
down to the absentee ballots to decide who will be city state's attorney. jennifer franciotti is live with more. good morning. >> there are people who believe the absentee votes do not matter. that is not the case in thhis race. despite the low turnout, it took the board of elections a full state to release complete returns. the race between bernstein and jessamy is too close to call. 3% was lost in limbo. judges forgot to turn in memory cards from 82 voting machines. the cards were tracked down. there is nothing suspicious or unusual about the slow accounting. >> when you have an election, it is not uncommon to not be at 100% within 24 hours. >> bernstein is leading jessamy by nearly 1300 votes. they are expecting to start counting the absentee ballots sometime this morning. jennifer franciotti, wbal-tv 11 news. >> the smoke has cleared in the race for baltimore county executive. county council member kevin kamenetz has emerged as the winner. he has called for unity with joe bartenfelder and his supporters. >> it is time we put our differences behind us. i reached out to everyone in
turn violent. >> a senator is stepping down after being indicted on bribery and extortion. jennifer franciotti joins us now with more on the case. >> despite an fbi raid on his home in 2008, currie continued to work as investigators looked into his ties to shoppers food warehouse. he is accused of using his office to benefit the grocery store chains. it is alleged he was paid $245,000 to secure advantages for shoppers. the indictment says he tried to save the chain of money and to give them an extension on meeting energy efficiency standards. he is accused of smoothing the way for a liquor license. he was a consultant for shoppers and his fees were disclosed. the chair of public policy says it is unusual to see a paper trail in a bribery case. >> the information is pretty iinteresting in that usually there is not a paper tropics prosecutors say currie failed to disclose his income on ethics forms. he will step down from some of his duties. we'll have more at 6:30. >> a man will spend the rest of his life behind bars. he was convicted back in may for the murder of another man in octo
:30 a.m. jennifer franciotti live on the scene this morning. bring us up to date. >> if you're traveling this way, falls road is shut down at northern parkway because this fire happened on a northern parkway address as you take falls road south toward the city. there's a side road parallel to northern parkway. 2 1/2-story building caught fire. inside six people, four women a grandfather and a 10-year-old boy. one of the victims say this fire started in a second-floor building and a 57-year-old grandmother was forced to jump from an atic and suffered injuries to her legs. two other women had to jump from the second floor as flames were shooting out the windows. one victim describes how it happens. >> i was so scared of the jumping asal perfect and it took me a minute and i was on the phone with 911 then i heard the boards starting to crack and crack and crack, so i had to jump. >> be so terrifying. that was christine who also told us one of the factors, her hair was being sinaged by the fire, and she could feel the fire burning her arm. luckily everyone else was able to get out of the hou

long. >> jennifer franciotti joins us live from fells point with the latest. we can hear the rain. >> i think god was on cue there. the rain got even heavier, which is ironic. just within the last 15 minutes. this is not the worst. the worst is yet to come. we are about ready to see a city crew come by. they are monitoring the situation in fells point. this is one area that is prone to flooding. on wednesday, this storm was being tracked. work crews in baltimore city yed to clear the storm drains. annapolis is well aware of the flood prone zone. they started sandbagging downtown. b.g.e. took a proactive approach to the storm. they have extra crews on standby in anticipation of power outages. >> the concern is the high wind. that can bring down the trees. with be heavy canopy today, we have some ground that is soaked from the recent storms. >> make sure you are prepared. have a battery-powered radio on standby and a corded phone would be handy to have. if you do have a generator, remember not to operate it inside your garage. in terms of storm drains, make sure you do not block one. if y
of murdering ken harris. jennifer franciotti joins us live with more. >> when you shop for jury duty, if you do not know which case you are going to hear. jurors were shocked to hear this is the ken harris murder trial. they found out the case could last for five weeks. they said they could not do it. others said they were the victim of a crime and others asked to speak properly with the judge to not be involved with this case. jury selection is expected to last five days. charles mcganey, gary collins, and jerome williams are charged with murder in the shooting death of ken harris. he has stopped by a lounge to use the restroom. he and the club owner were ambushed in a robbery attempt 3 har. harris was shot in the back as he attempted to leave the scene. it will be hard to find an iimpartial panel. >> a lot of people are not going to want to sit on it because they may have known as the victim or they have heard so much about it that they already have formed an opinion. >> prosecutors are expected to call as many as 50 witnesses to the stand, including the woman who said she was with harris the
firefighters put to the test with two four-alarm fires yesterday. >> jennifer franciotti with more on that story. >> it was quite a scene yesterday. firefighters were busy fighting fires to 11 houses on two niche blocks. all but two houses were vacant. five rowhouses went up in flames there. then three more caught fire on the other side. firefighters rushed to houses on the next block. everyone did get out safely. no word on what caused the first fire, but officials are pretty sure of what happened on north cary street. >> one consideration is there may have been embers that may have been blown from one fire across the street to the next may have ignited that one. we don't know at this point. >> in all 100 firefighters responded. one firefighter suffered minor injuries. mindy back to you. >> a 34-year-old columbia man who survived an apartment fire is charged with not only setting the blaze, but killing his ex-wife moments earlier. damon white set fire to the apartment to cover up the murder of the 35-year-old woman. she obtained a restraining order against her husband in 2008. >>
and another seriously injured in howard county. >> jennifer franciotti is live at shock trauma this morning with details on the story. >> good morning. the man who was seriously injured was taken here to shock trauma, but police believe whatever happened to him happened before the fire broke out. the fire broke out before 3:00, tuesday afternoon. when firefighters roifed they found the body of a woman inside and a seriously injured man. >> we don't think the injuries were the death of the woman were caused by the fire. >> investigators say it's unclear whether a domestic dispute or a third party is to blame. >> it's shocking and heartbreaking. this woman had four children. >> friends say the couple in their 30's was raising two girls and two boys who range in age from 6-17. >> all of them are very good kids. well-manner. well-behaved. i wish i had the space. i'd take them in myself. because she was an exceptional mom to those kids, and to know those kids' mom is gone now is just heart-wrenching. it's very heart-wrenching. >> neighbors tell lose throughs two youngest children walked home fro
enough to protect their child from being bullied. >> jennifer franciotti is live with more. >> this family is suing for three counts of -- they are seeking anywhere from $1 million to $10 million in damages. they claim a student back in patapsco middle school was bullied. he was stabbed and struck with pencils and drumsticks and was pushed into lockers. the bullying in schools is becoming a growing problem around the country. baltimore county held their annual saved school council and touched on the issue and how it affects schools and policies. >> we have a positive behavior planning approach to problems such as bullying. what the problems from a three tiered response and a problem- solving approach. >> spokesperson said the just received a copy of the lawsuit and so they are not commenting pending legislation. now back to you. >> thank you. a settlement has been reached in a civil suit stemming from a deadly crash on the chesapeake bay bridge back in 2008. john short was killed when is a tractor-trailer went into the bay after swerving to avoid a car. police say baldwin h
